Research Interests

My main concerns in automatic control are devoted to state estimation, fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control of complex systems.

The system state estimation consists in determining -at each instant- the value of the system's internal variables from the knowledge of the inputs, the outputs, and a mathematical model linking these variables. Because of the model complexity (nonlinearities, mixing of algebraic and differential equations), the model uncertainty, the presence of measurement noise or unknown inputs, the state estimation may become a tedious task.

The overall goal of diagnosis is to identify and characterize as accurately and as quickly as possible,  the malfunctions affecting a process. Among the various known methods, those covered by my work can be classified as "model-based". In this framework, it is assumed that a mathematical model accurately describing the functioning of the system is available. Analyzing the differences between the measured and the estimated growths, we try to characterize the dysfunctions that are the most likely to explain these discrepancies. In particular, one seeks to know the time of the fault occurrence, its class, and its  amplitude.

The basic concept of Fault Tolerant Control is to modify the control input according to the obtained knowledge on the fault affecting the system, in order to  to compensate the diagnosed fault. The fault tolerant command is not only designed to ensure stability, but also to reach more ambitious objectives like tracking a reference state (or output) trajectory.

These techniques are highly dependent on the nature of the process model. Many techniques have been developped in the last decades for systems described by simple models (linear time invariant). However, estimation, diagnosis and fault tolerant control of more complex models are still open problems. The overall aim of my work is to extend some results to more generic model classes, including:
  • singular or descriptor models;
  • singular models with time delay;
  • singular multimodel;
  • switched singular systems;
  • nonlinear decoupled multiple model;
  • nonlinear multiple model with unmeasurable decision variables
  • multimodel with input saturation
