Hugues Garnier is Professor at the University of Lorraine in France. In 1995 he received a Ph.D. in Automatic Control from the Henri Poincaré University in Nancy, France. His research interests deals with machine learning and data science for modeling and control of complex systems. He has held visiting positions at different universities including U.K., Australia and the U.S.A. In 1992-1993, he visited the Industrial Control Centre at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2003-2004, he visited the Centre for Complex Dynamic Systems and Control, University of Newcastle, Australia. In 2006 and 2007, he has hold short term visiting positions at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. In 2012-2013, he visited the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, University of California, San Diego, USA. Hugues Garnier is a member of the IFAC Technical Committee "Modelling, Identification and Signal Processing" and of the IEEE technical committee "System Identification and Adaptive Control". He was also a member of the International Program Committee (IPC) for the last six IFAC Symposium on System Identification (SYSID), held respectively in Newcastle, Australia in 2006 (SYSID'2006), in Saint-Malo, France in 2009 (SYSID'2009), in Brussels, Belgium in 2012 (SYSID'2012), in Beijing in 2015 (SYSID'2015), in Stockholm in 2018 (SYSID'2018), in Padova in 2021 (SYSID'2021), in Boston in 2024 (SYSID'2024). He is a member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Control. He has written several contributions on new techniques for continuous-time model identification from sampled data and organised many invited sessions and workshop at international congresses in this research area. His research work has been motivated by applications to real-life physical systems as well as by software tool development. He is behind CONTSID, a Matlab toolbox for data-driven continuous-time system identification. Since 2000, he has been very active in promoting direct continuous-time approaches to system identification. He was invited to act as guest editor for three special issues: the first for IET Control Theory & Applications that appeared in May 2011, the second and third for International Journal of Control that appeared in 2014 and 2017. Hugues Garnier is the co-editor of two books: the first entitled Identification of continuous-time models from sampled data, Springer-Verlag, London, 2008; the second entitled System Identification, Environmetal Modelling, and Control Systems Design, Springer-Verlag, London, 2012. In 2015, he gave a semi-plenary talk at the European Control Conference (ECC) held in Linz, Austria. In 2016, he was invited to give a two-days course as guest lecturer at the 9th edition of the Doctoral School on System Identification organized at Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB) in Belgium. In Spring 2017 and 2018 he organized at Polytech Nancy a four-days Doctoral School on Data-driven Modelling. Hugues's other major professional interest is in pedagogy: teaching, curriculum development and improvement. From 2018 to 2024, he was head of Department of the 3-year engineering programme in Computer Science, Control Engineering, Robotics, IT Networks (IA2R) at Polytech Nancy. Last, but not least, he enjoys long-distance triathlon.
